Terms and Conditions

Effective date: June 7, 2026

Acceptance of these terms

By accessing or using Chaptered, you agree to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

Accounts

You are responsible for your account and for all activity under it.

  • Keep your login credentials secure and notify us if you believe your account has been compromised.
  • Provide accurate information and keep it up to date.
  • You must be legally able to enter into a binding agreement in your jurisdiction to use the service.

Acceptable use

You agree to use Chaptered lawfully and not to misuse the service.

  • Do not use the service for unlawful, harmful, or infringing activities.
  • Do not interfere with or disrupt the service, attempt unauthorized access, or abuse rate limits.
  • Do not reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code except to the extent permitted by law.

Your content

You retain ownership of the content you create and upload to Chaptered.

  • You own your writing and project content.
  • You are responsible for the content you create, including ensuring you have the rights to upload and publish it.
  • You grant us a limited, non-exclusive licence to host, copy, transmit, process, moderate, publish, and display your content only as needed to operate and provide Chaptered, comply with law, and enforce these terms. This licence ends when the content is deleted, except where retention is reasonably required for legal, security, backup, or enforcement purposes.

Publishing and content moderation

Content stays private until you choose to publish it. Content submitted for publication is screened under our publication rules before it becomes available to readers.

  • We may use automated systems, including a third-party large language model (LLM), to analyse the plain text of scenes included in a publish request.
  • You must not publish unlawful or infringing content, explicit sexual or pornographic content, sexual content involving minors, instructions or encouragement for self-harm, defamatory content about identifiable real people, hateful content or hate speech directed at a person or group based on a protected characteristic, incitement to violence, exploitative content, or other content that creates a material risk to readers or the service.
  • Moderation may approve content, block publication, or keep content hidden from readers pending staff review. We may also suspend or remove published content that violates these terms or applicable law.
  • Flagged content may be reviewed by authorised staff. If you believe an automated decision is incorrect, you may contact support to request review, but review does not guarantee publication or restoration.
  • Automated moderation may produce false positives or false negatives. We do not guarantee that moderation will identify every violation or that every decision will be error-free.

Third-party services

Chaptered incorporates certain third-party software to provide features within the service.

  • Grammar and spellcheck features are powered by LanguageTool (LGPL 2.1), which runs on our servers. Your content is processed locally by this service for the purpose of providing writing assistance.
  • When you submit content for publication, a third-party LLM provider processes the plain text of the submitted scenes for content moderation. See the Privacy Policy for details about the data sent and retained.

Service availability and backups

We work to keep Chaptered reliable, but the service may occasionally be unavailable.

  • We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.
  • We may perform maintenance or updates that affect availability.
  • You are responsible for maintaining your own backups of important content (for example, by exporting your work).

Disclaimer of warranties

Chaptered is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for damages arising out of or related to your use of Chaptered.

  • This includes damages resulting from server outages, software bugs, synchronization failures, or service interruptions.
  • This includes loss of data, loss of content, or inability to access your content.
  • This includes indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, and loss of profits or business opportunities.

Termination

We may suspend or terminate access to the service if you violate these terms, and you may stop using the service at any time.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will provide notice as required.
